I’m in my mermaid/surfer girl summertime era right now and can’t seem to get enough seaside inspired jewels into the mix. We spent two whole days with friends at the beach last weekend and I was reminded how salty air dried hair and some jumbled jewels around your neck is an undeniably cool summertime vibe.
I had reached for an older éliou bead and shell necklace and put it with two things I was already wearing at the time—this tennis necklace and a gold charm necklace. All three pieces hit just at my collarbone and since putting them on the morning before heading to the beach, I haven’t taken them off. I’ve since worn the combo with crewneck tees, a favorite basic black bikini, this button down linen shirt (an essential this summer) as a swim coverup and vintage tees because there is just something about a messy mix of jewels on top of a beat up shirt.
The layering of jewels can be a true trial and error but a few things I’ve picked up along the way is that choosing different materials can sometimes lead to something great. I can’t get this combo out of my head with a bright orange surf cord in the mix, it’s so surfer girl cool… a brand not to miss if you love a sea-inspired gem. I’ve been pining for one of her pieces for a decade plus now, circling a few like this quartz urchin and this onyx shell charm. You could get that same surfer girl vibe below with this necklace or one of these skinny beaded necklaces ($28) or one of these colored cords ($9). The gist is to mix something colorful and unexpected.
Translucent charms that have a sea-glass look to them feel very mermaid-esque to me and I have about 10 different images/brands I have come across that have made me decide I need one. In particular these tourmaline carved fish with diamonds by a new-to-me-brand I came across thanks to Lilly Sisto. The way the diamonds look like a hook coming out of the mouth is just too good… speaking of fish, there is something about these silver fish charms that make me want to wear more silver this summer like this necklace with crystal beads or this amazing silver shell clutch.
I will always love a raw pearl for that nod to the salty sea. I have been living in these simple Chan Luu earrings and wore them in Mexico with all the crisp white basics—in particular this linen button down, my summer hero. Wearing them poolside felt like the perfect minimal accessory—especially with a balconette bikini. This raw pearl on a cord (choose your shade, I have my eye on red) is currently in my cart, another great piece to layer with and not too precious for your blue crush moment in the waves. This coral/pearl necklace has not left my mind since I spotted it the other day, so stunning. Beatrice Valenzuela is another favorite brand that thoughtfully incorporates raw pearls and gems. I have a dainty pearl necklace of hers that I wear a ton that layers so well with other pieces and recently discovered these incredible shell earrings and this moonshell necklace.
A few noteworthy finds in that even Ariel would approve of herself that are under $200. I brought these seashell earrings to Mexico and loved wearing them with this dress, felt like a match made in heaven. The thickness of this necklace is just so good. I see it with a minimal dress and a low bun. And these gold classic shell earrings.
Happy summering mermaid!
xx Samantha
